HOUSTON: 3D scanner will open new crime scene doors for Harris County investigators
June 14, 2016
The Harris County Sheriff's Office will have a new $170,000 3-D scanner to deploy for complex crime scenes. The scanner will provide a full 3-D rendering of a crime scene and allow a jury to visually walk through it. The machine is able to take millions of photographs and put them together to create a layout of the crime scene. It can even recognize color and measure the distance between two objects.
The Sheriff's Office believes the machine will save time and resources and allow them to provide investigators with detailed renderings of a crime scene. This new piece of equipment shows the city is dedicated to making sure the police have top-of-the-line equipment to use in solving crimes.
